Useful Moving and Packing Tips For Your Home Move

The following are some moving and packing tips that will hopefully reduce the stress of your big move, save time and protect your possessions.

• Getting more boxes than you think you need is a real good idea. Maybe a lot more.

• Using smaller boxes for books and larger boxes for lighter items works best.

• Packing room by room will keep similar items together.

• Reinforcing the bottoms of boxes with at least one strip of packing tape will help prevent spills.

• Packing boxes firmly will prevent shifting during the move.

• Using crumpled paper for padding and sealing boxes tightly with wide packing tape protects valuable items.

• Packing records and CDs vertically in boxes instead of flat reduces the chance of damage.

• Placing heavier items on the bottom of a box and lighter items on top help prevent possessions from being crushed.

• Using towels, linens, curtains, etc. to pad boxes protects fragile items. Clearly mark these boxes "FRAGILE."

• Using a jumbo box for lampshades with a lot of cushion will prevent the lampshades from being crushed.

• When disassembling furniture, beds, dressers, etc., put the hardware into a plastic bag along with any assembly instructions and tape it onto the item itself.

• If possible, ask your mover if you can leave clothes in dresser drawers. Also, find out from your movers how they want hanging clothes packed.

• Make a master list of all household items and your belongings.

• Pack rugs last so they can be the first items unloaded and placed at your new location.

• Number boxes when packing. Clearly indicate on the box its room destination. Also write on the master list the contents of the numbered boxes.

• If possible, move your most valuable and expensive possessions yourself.

Before you move, you should also fill a box of essentials and label it "Open Me First." Move this box yourself. Include in this box items like basic tools (flashlight, pocket knife, hammer, screwdriver, nails, masking tape, tape measure and lightbulbs), bathroom essentials (hand towels, soap, toilet paper, shampoo and shower curtain) and kitchen items (paper towels, coffemaker and coffee filters, paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, dish detergent, sponge, pet food, dishes and trash bags).
