The City of Haverhill, located in northeastern Massachusetts (Essex County) on the Merrimack River, is one of the oldest historic communities in the Commonwealth. What is commonly referred to as Bradford, MA is actually a section of Haverhill. Haverhill is bordered by several communities, including Methuen on the west, Groveland and Boxford on the south, West Newbury on the east, and sales-tax-free New Hampshire on the north. Haverhill contains almost 36 square miles of area and a wide variety of land uses, ranging from rural agricultural areas to urban areas, such as the city's historical industrial center.

Haverhill is approximately a 40-minute drive from Boston and Concord, NH, 15 minutes from Newburyport, MA and four hours from New York City. Haverhill also is less than 30 minutes from the beautiful New Hampshire seacoast and not much farther from some of New England's premier ski resorts. Haverhill is connected to New England via Interstate 495 and by commuter rail. Interstates 93 and 95 are only about a 15-minute drive away. Haverhill has two major airports within an hour drive, including Logan International Airport in Boston and Manchester Airport in Manchester, NH.

Established in 1640 as Pentucket, Haverhill was incorporated as a city in 1870. Although originally settled as farmland, the city evolved into a major industrial center through the establishment of saw and grist mills in the late 17th Century, tanneries and boat yards in the early 18th Century and shoe manufacturing, its leading industry for 180 years. The city remained a thriving industrial center until the devastating economic depression of the 1930s. Currently, computer technology and research industries thrive within Haverhill's seven industrial parks, business districts, and newly rehabilitated central business district.

The City has a tremendous array of active and passive recreational opportunities, such as four 18-hole golf courses, a downhill ski area, two horseback riding academies, a public skating rink and a sailing program. The Merrimack River travels for about 12 miles through the city, providing walking, jogging, bird watching and boating opportunities. Haverhill's residents invite visitors to come and watch the growing population of bald eagles, which inhabit the city along the Merrimack River. Money Magazine rated Haverhill the No. 1 place to live in New England in 1995.

Downtown Haverhill recently has experienced a renaissance. Besides an array of restaurants, there are several antique stores, art galleries and retail shops. The city is home to Merrimack Valley Hospital, a recently built $6 million police station, an excellent public library and four fairly new public schools.

Some interesting facts about Haverhill include the following: George Washington visited Haverhill on November 4, 1789. John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), the celebrated Quaker poet and abolitionist, was born in Haverhill in 1807. Bob Montana (1920-1975), in 1941, created the Archie comic strip, which apparently depicted his days as a student at Haverhill High School. Louis B. Mayer (1885-1957), of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios fame, got his start in the motion picture industry in Haverhill when he purchased the Gem Theater in 1907. Haverhill resident William H. Moody (1853-1917) was appointed U.S. Attorney General by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. President Roosevelt nominated Moody to the Supreme Court in 1906. Moody served on the nation's highest court until 1910.
